It looks like the run that Destiny 2 has been on is coming to an end soon. A couple of months before the game’s nine-year anniversary, Bungie announced that it will be ending support on active development of its long-running live service title with the final content update, Monument of Triumph releasing on June 9th, according to a blog post.
“For almost twelve years, we have had the joy and honor to explore the Destiny universe with you all.Through all the ups and downs, surprises and triumphs, building Destiny alongside our players has been a monumental privilege,” Bungie wrote in a blog post.
The studio describes Destiny 2‘s last update as a“collection of love letters to players” that looks to fulfill many player requests before Bungie walks slowly into the sunset as it says goodbye to the Destiny sequel.
While the studio’s love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it says the release of its last big expansion in 2025, The Final Shape, made it clear its time for telling stories in Destiny 2 was ticking down and almost a year later that time has sadly come. Bungie says like the original Destiny, the sequel will remain playable for those wanting to boot up the game after the June 9th date or anyone new wanting to play Destiny 2 fresh in the future.
“As our focus turns towards a new beginning for Bungie, we will begin work incubating our next games. To that end, on June 9, 2026, we will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2 to begin that new journey as a studio. Though active development may be concluding, we will ensure that Destiny 2 remains playable, just as the original Destiny is today. Many changes in this final update will aim to ensure that Destiny 2 is a welcoming place for players to return to,” Bungie added.
“We’re proud of Destiny 2, the places it took us, and the legacy it has created. Because of you all, our universe is vast, built on years of shared stories, adventures, and victories. From the Cosmodrome to the Pale Heart to the Lawless Frontier, we have forged life-long memories and friendships with you all. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made that journey with us. From the deepest part of our hearts, thank you, and we’ll see you in the stars.”
Currently, Bungie is supporting its PvP extraction shooter Marathon, which launched back in March. While it hasn’t been a huge homerun of the park success for Bungie, Marathon has a community that loves playing it and feels like it is slowly building momentum with each week. Marathon‘s second season is launching on June 2nd and looks to introduce a new PvE mode that will hopefully bring more new players into the game. As for what Bungie does beyond Marathon, it remains to be seen what their next game is, a Destiny 3 seems unlikely, with how their post reads more like them being done with the Destiny franchise as a whole than anything else.
