We haven’t talked about Embracer for a while, have we? The company is still in the midst of attempting to get itself together, and part of that might involve some good news because the company’s CEO is saying some old IP could be revived.
Lars Wingefors published an open letter to shareholders that’s probably worth reading if you have any interest in the industry since Embracer still owns a lot of developers and IP. But for now, our interest is in a specific piece.
“…we will more actively be exploring external partnership around our roster of other well-known IPs such as Saints Row, Legacy of Kain, Deus Ex, Red Faction, The Mask, Thief, TimeSplitters, amongst many others”
Wingefors wording seems very clear: they intend on licensing out their IP to other developers who may be interested in working on them. This really opens the doors for a lot of IP to make a grand return. Saints Row has been pretty much did since its last entry in 2022, Red Faction hasn’t seen a new release since 2018 and so on and so on.
The reason for this is the formation of a third spin-off group that will become its own publically listed company called Fellowship Entertainment, which is an IP-led games and licensing company, built around major franchises like Tomb Raider, The Lord of the Rings, Metro, Dead Island, Darksiders, Remnant, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
Keep in mind, these new partnerships might not always be games, but could also be books, comics, movies, merch and other assorted bits and bobs.
Personally, I’d like Thief to make a proper comeback as I think it has a lot of potential. Legacy of Kain as well, since we just had the remake/remasters.
