Revealed at State of Play, Ikumi Nakamura returns with Kemuri.
Kemuri is a yokai-possession action game set in Kemuri City, where life and death coexist. You’re tasked with dealing with the paranormal and exploring the vertical city’s rooftops, back alleys, and hidden ruins solo or online via co-op with two other players.
Nakamura says Kemuri City is a place “where you may encounter something you once lost again.” The reason is that the city exists on the boundaries between life and death.
Yokai range from traditional folklore to modern designs unique to this world. They’re all born from “Kemuri” — the lingering emotions and thoughts of humanity, and are created by the city itself.
As a yokai hunter, search for yokai, form contracts with them and use their powers to grow stronger. There is freedom in how you fight, whether that’s at close range or at long range.
“At the core of Kemuri’s gameplay is the ‘Foxwindow.” By forming a hand gesture and peering through the gap between your fingers, hidden fractures between worlds begin to emerge. Before you realize it, you may already be standing inside a yokai realm.” Nakamura reveals.
Defeating yokai is only part of how things unfold. Their powers manifest as Possession Apparel, and fighting alongside them allows your appearance to change.
Kemuri is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 in 2027.
