Sony’s strategy for GAAS titles has been far from a resounding success. Aside from the excellent Helldivers 2, the Japanese company has suffered a string of commercial setbacks and cancellations. These cancellations have even led to layoffs and studio closures.

However, the company isn’t giving up just yet! In an interview with Famitsu, PlayStation head Hideaki Nishino expressed his confidence in the potential of these online games to reach a wide audience. He also stated that service-based games can “revitalize the market through content produced in-house and by third-party studios.”

“We believe that service-based games are content that attracts users on a global scale, so we want to continue revitalizing the market through content produced in-house and by third-party studios.

With service-based games, it’s important to continuously provide something new. The genre itself is relatively new, and I think many people are trying out various approaches. So we also want to continue taking on challenges in this context.”

Finally, Nishino reaffirmed that PlayStation Studios’ single-player games will remain exclusive, and that service-based games will also be released on PC.
