Microsoft has revealed the details of its sweeping restructuring plan, which will result in 3,200 layoffs and the sale of five studios. While Obsidian Entertainment is not among the developers being let go by Xbox, it is nonetheless heavily affected by this major reset.
In a recent article, Kotaku reports that 25% of Obsidian’s employees have been or will be laid off. This amounts to between 60 and 70 people, including producers, artists, designers, programmers, QA testers, writers, and many other team members. Senior executives, some of whom had been with the company for over a decade, also lost their jobs.
For example, the art director of The Outer Worlds, as well as Obsidian’s sole recruiter, have been let go. It’s worth noting that, according to Kotaku, development of Grounded 2 and the upcoming DLC for The Outer Worlds 2 will go on, though the future of the other projects remains uncertain.
