Yet another bombshell for the video game industry! Following the controversy surrounding the absence of a disc in the physical edition of GTA VI, PlayStation has decided to stop producing physical media.
Sony has revealed that new games released on PlayStation consoles will no longer include physical discs starting in January 2028. The company cites “changing consumer preferences and trends in the entertainment industry as a whole, which are shifting away from physical media toward digital formats” to explain its decision. As a result, games will be available exclusively in digital format via the PlayStation Store and other retailers.
It is important to note that this transition does not affect games already available or those set to be released before January 2028.
“This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
We’ll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or PlayStation Store. We remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans and we thank you for your continued support.”
